The F-22 Raptor is an example of using 3D geometry in substitution of film footage and a costly or impossible film shoot. Filming the jet in flight would not be an option. At the time, the F-22 was still in testing, so getting clearence to shoot arials of the actual fighter was impossible. The jet was re-created in 3D based on Lockheeds photos from test flights. The F-22 was ploy-modeled from the photos, and the 90,000 polygon model was then textured with hand painted maps based on the same photos. The Final renders were then composited in After Effects against arial landscape photos that were tracked behind the 3D model to give the illusion of flight.
